Proof of performance – a true differentiator

Any professional can talk a great game, but winning offers require proof. A well-built brag book can set you apart from the crowd and back up every claim with facts.

You’ve probably heard it before: “Show, don’t tell.” When it comes to landing a new job or opportunity, that advice still holds true. One effective way to do this is by creating a “brag book.” But what exactly is that?

What is a brag book? Think of a brag book as your personal highlight reel. It’s a collection of your achievements, awards, and any proof that backs up what you say in interviews.

Back when I started in real estate over 25 years ago, everyone had one. It seems to have fallen out of favor lately, but I believe it’s time to bring it back.

Why go through the trouble of compiling all this information? The simple answer: to stand out. When applying for a job, having actual proof of your accomplishments can set you apart from other candidates. Instead of just saying you were the “top seller” or “Rookie of the Year,” you can show it.

“In interviews, evidence isn’t extra; it’s your edge.”

What should you put in your brag book? Here are some ideas:

  • Quarter attainment: Show how you met or exceeded your sales targets.
  • Stack rankings: If you have rankings from previous jobs, include them. They provide concrete evidence of your success.
  • Awards and recognition: This could be anything from “Presidents Club” to “Most New Logos Won in a Year.” These titles don’t just sound good; they demonstrate your capabilities.
  • Earnings proof: If you’re comfortable, showing proof of your earnings can reflect your success in closing deals.

When you’re in an interview, don’t hesitate to pull out your brag book. While many candidates simply talk about their accomplishments, showing tangible proof makes a stronger impact. It’s unusual, and that’s what makes it memorable.

The job market is competitive, but having a brag book can give you an edge. For more tips or guidance, contact us at (703) 955-445, info@cmicareers.com, or brockboyd@cmicareers.com. Let’s work together to advance your career!
